Farmers in Oriental Negros welcomed the positive effects of the abnormal weather phenomenon caused by the onset of La Niņa.

Provincial Agriculturist of Oriental Negros Gregorio Paltinca said at the Philippine Information Agency Kapihan forum recently that farmers are experiencing the "positive side" of La Niņa, as the rain brought about by the abnormal weather phenomenon has been beneficial to the farmers in view of the summer season, from February to April.

He said that, with the onset of the dry season, there is not enough water in areas planted with rice especially during the second cropping.

Security guard shoots at lovers;
faces illegal gun possession raps

A security guard employed by the Solid Security and General Services is facing charges of illegal possession of firearms for allegedly firing warning shots to two lovers in front of the Lee Super Plaza after midnight yesterday, at San Jose Street, Dumaguete City.

The suspect, Fredie de Guzman, was detailed to the Lee Super Plaza when he fired the warning shots using his .38 caliber revolver service firearm, police said.

Responding police officers led by SPO4 Eli Agapay brought the blue guard to the police station for failure to present supporting documents for the firearm.

damages due to fire

The Bureau of Fire Protection in Oriental Negros reported that the total damage caused by fire incidents in 2005 was pegged at P23.2 million.

The BFP, at the Kapihan forum of the Philippine Information Agency at the Bethel Guesthouse, Dumaguete City, Thursday said there were a total of 288 fire incidents reported in the province last year.

From January to March this year, 54 fire incidents have been recorded with the total damage placed at P2.7 million.
