There's this bridge when you enter Talisay from Silay that gives a perfect illustration of the extreme lengths Filipinos can go to because of their laziness. The Catabla Bridge, is as far as I know, is the only way into Talisay if you are coming from the northern part of the island. The traffic passing through this bridge is supposed to be one way, going in the direction of Talisay. Just before the bridge, there is a small community whose inhabitants are so lazy that they don't mind repeatedly risking life and limb when the tricycles they ride go against the flow of traffic to cross the bridge so they don't have to walk across it on their way home.

Remember that this is a bridge along the national highway, where vehicles of all sizes travel at high speed. Loaded tricycles going against the flow of traffic, is dangerous enough on normal roads.

Along bridges, it is a disaster waiting to happen. I don't know if the authorities of Talisay have been deliberately ignoring this problem, but it has been going on for years. It has been going on so long that the tricycle drivers actually even have the gall to give you the evil eye if you are unlucky enough to make their illegal crossing difficult for them. I have the impression that only a major accident happening to one of these tricycles and their occupants along that bridge will get the attention, albeit temporary, of the city officials. I hope one of those officials reads this article and decides to do something about it.

The root of the problem lies in the Filipino's reluctance to walk. Our tropical weather, combined with the lack of covered walkways, and our outdated, horribly inefficient public transportation system that actually encourages random stopping to pick up and discharge passengers literally anywhere have combined to create the laziest commuting public in the entire universe. Why walk when you can ride? The jeepney will drop you off anywhere… in the middle of the street, in the middle of intersections, along corners.
