City council seeking probe
on World Series controversy

The Bacolod City Sangguniang Panlungsod passed Monday an Omnibus resolution calling for a thorough inquiry on the cancelled trip of the city's softball players to the Senior League Word Series 2005, and other delegates who had also represented the Philippines previously.

The resolution also requests the Department of Education and Sports to set sanctions for sports events participated in by students and school officials that are not part of the regular sports programs of the agency, to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The resolution said the DepEd will investigate and provide sanctions for officials who commit negligence or faults resulting in the emotional and psychological injury of the players and their parents.

It also requests the Bacolod City Sports Council to provide and access sustainable programs for players so they can avail of college scholarships and opportunities.

It also requests DepEd to demand that the heads of delegations of the Paglaum Village National High School for 2005, and previous years, to render an accounting of all sums and properties donated as rewards or grants to the players and the school, including the P1 million incentive given by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in 2003.

Instead of flying to Sussex Country, Delaware, site of the 2005 Senior Legue World Series that started Aug. 7, eight of the 11 members of the Paglaum Village National High School softbelles, defending Junior League champions had to return to Bacolod on August 8 after staying in Manila for a week, when no tickets for their flight were procured for them by their officials.

Instead, six of the officials, including the controversial coach Reynaldo "Guy" Fuentes, PVNHS principal Benjamin Barredo, and only three players who were related to them, were able to leave for the United States on first week of August.

The team officials who left, promising to raise funds in the US so the rest of the members could follow, later informed the players that it was too late, and they could not raise funds for their airfare.

The PVNHS team had to give up their participation in the World Series 2005 because of this.*CGS
