Mia places second;
Juvic reaches finals

Bacolod's pride Mia Piccio ousted another seasoned player yesterday but fell short of the title after bowing to Frances Bondad, 2-and-1, in the women's finals, while Juvic Pagunsan sealed a titular clash with Malaysian Siva Chandrah in the 2005 RP Amateur Championships at the Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club.

The 13-year-old Piccio, ranked fourth at the end of the 36-hole classification, showed composure beyond her years in taking out top seed Carmelette Villaroman, 1-up, yesterday morning and was poised for another upset win.

But Bondad, a Filipina based in Australia, had other things in mind. She erased a 1-down deficit with a par-birdie-par string from the 15th to rule the first-ever staging of the women's tournament and her second national title, after the stroke play of the 2004 Philippine Ladies' Open.

Chess, table tennis
hostilities kick off

Two events in the 2005 Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports Cultural and Educational Association sports meet will kick off in Bacolod City today.

The chess hostilities in the collegiate, high school and elementary categories will begin at Bacolod Tay Tung High School Canteen, while the table tennis competitions in the secondary and primary divisions will be held at the Lopue's San Sebastian-Annex.

Defending champion University of St. La Salle is expected to be challenged by last year's runner-up West Negros College in the men's division, while the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos will try to preserve its women's title against a tough field that includes last year's second placer USLS.

Mustangs, Stingers
collide at Po Hang today

Action is expected to heat up today as six-time defending champion West Negros College and last year's runner-up Colegio de San Agustin-Bacolod battle different rivals in the 2005 NOPSSCEA collegiate basketball tournament at the Po Hang Gym of Bacolod Tay Tung High School today.

The Mustangs eye their third win when they face the University of St. La Salle at 4 p.m., before CSA-B takes on the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos at 5:30 p.m.

"I have a solid line-up, but the players cannot take La Salle lightly because it also prepared well for the tournament", Mustangs coach Elvis Atinado told the DAILY STAR.
