hostilities kick off

Two events in the 2005 Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports Cultural and Educational Association sports meet will kick off in Bacolod City today.

The chess hostilities in the collegiate, high school and elementary categories will begin at Bacolod Tay Tung High School Canteen, while the table tennis competitions in the secondary and primary divisions will be held at the Lopue's San Sebastian-Annex.

Defending champion University of St. La Salle is expected to be challenged by last year's runner-up West Negros College in the men's division, while the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos will try to preserve its women's title against a tough field that includes last year's second placer USLS.

The Bacolod Christian Education Center will try to preserve its championship in the high school boys and girls' divisions, while Tay Tung aims back-to-back crowns in the elementary boys and girls' categories.

In table tennis, the St. Joseph School-La Salle eyes another title in the singles and doubles side of high school boys. The BTTHS paddlers are vying a second consecutive championship in the elementary girls category.

Tay Tung will be pitted against Silay City-based St. Francis of Assisi and St. Scholastica's Academy.

Reigning elementary boys' titlist SFAS is expecting tough competition from Tay Tung, SSA and St. La Salle. Other disciplines that have began in the 2005 NOPSSCEA season are basketball, volleyball, football and sepak takraw. *CIT
