Massacre suspect killed
in shootout with police

The principal suspect in the Aug. 10 massacre in Sta. Catalina, Oriental Negros, was killed Thursday in an encounter with pursuing operatives in Sitio Dobdob, Barangay Poblacion, in the town.

Dante Sienes Obaniana was shot by lawmen when he allegedly fired at the police operatives, prompting them to fire back with M-16 rifles.

Joint operatives of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group headed by Sr. Inspector Germano Mallari, Sta. Catalina Police led by Insp. Alvin Gumacal, and the 1st company of the 705th RMG, had scoured the sugarcane field in the place to serve the warrant of arrest to Obaniana.

City Hall padlocks
another lotto outlet

Another lotto outlet was padlocked by the Dumaguete City Hall yesterday, in line with the Regional Trial Court Branch 41 decision upholding the validity of the cease-and-desist order of Mayor Agustin Perdices on July 18, 2001.

The lotto outlet located at Flores Avenue, Barangay Looc, Dumaguete is owned by Angelica Medina.

In a five-page order, RTC Branch 41 Judge Araceli Alafriz, dismissed the complaint of Medina for declaratory relief and injunction with prayer for the issuance of a temporary restraining, against the city government, on July 19, 2001.

NORSU to hike tuition fees

The Negros Oriental State University will implement a 100 percent increase in tuition in the second semester of school year 2005-2006.

NORSU president Dr. Henry Sojor told the DAILY STAR the increase was supposed to take effect in the first semester of the school year yet, as approved by its Board of Regents. But because of the requests of parents and students, the university decided to collect the increase in the second semester.

With the increase, the tuition at NORSU will now be P2,000 from P1,000. Sojor said the university will also increase the internet and development fees from P150 to P300 and P200 to P400, respectively.
