The Negros Oriental State University will implement a 100 percent
increase in tuition in the second semester of school year 2005-2006.
NORSU president Dr. Henry Sojor told the DAILY STAR the increase
was supposed to take effect in the first semester of the school
year yet, as approved by its Board of Regents. But because of the
requests of parents and students, the university decided to collect
the increase in the second semester.
With the increase, the tuition at NORSU will now be P2,000
from P1,000. Sojor said the university will also increase the internet
and development fees from P150 to P300 and P200 to P400, respectively.
Despite the increase, he said, the tuition of NORSU is still
the lowest in the country, noting that in other State colleges and
universities, the tuition is very much higher.
Sojor also said the increase is imperative since the national
government has no longer been giving capital outlay to SUCS, for
the past five years.
He said even the allocation for NORSU embodied in the national
budget was reduced by about P10 million this year.
He added that the income that can be generated from the increased
school fees will also be used to raise the salaries of part-time
teachers.*RA
