Capitol proposing
P750M '06 budget
BY RENE GENOVE

The Oriental Negros Sangguniang Panlalawigan is set to deliberate on the P750 million budget for 2006 proposed by Gov. George Arnaiz, which is 8.6 percent higher than that of this year.

In his explanatory note for the budget proposal, Arnaiz said the appropriations are in line with the priority thrusts of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo such as education, jobs, clean water, power and electrification, credit, and low-priced medicines.

He said the budget will center on the Gender and Development program of the province pursuant to Republic Act 7192.

Bais adds 100
hectares for mangroves

Bais City Mayor Hector Villanueva said he will plant more mangrove trees on the coastal areas of the city to expand its wetland areas to 500 hectares by next year.

Villanueva said he had observed that the Talabong Island located in his town is a major destination of migratory birds such as cranes, because of the presence of rich food sources in its mangrove area.

He said he will pursue his plan despite warnings about the threat of migratory birds from the Asian mainland carrying the bird flu virus.

1,000 scouters
join jamborette

About 1000 boy scouts from the provinces of Oriental Negros and Siquijor will participate in the 9th Council-Wide Jamborette, Dec. 8-13, in Barangay Tambo, Ayungon town, Oriental Negros.

The campsite will be in a seven-hectare area of Sitio Cabog, Barangay Tambo, which is near the 10,000-hectare rainforest of Ayungon, the only remaining forest in the host province.

"Bring your jackets. It's going to be very cold," warned Ayungon Mayor Edsel Enardecido, who is also camp chief this year.
