Lady booters open
bid versus Thailand

Boosted by a seven-month extensive training, the Philippine women's football team gets a chance to exact revenge for their male counterparts when it takes on Thailand in the Southeast Asian Games at the Marikina Sports Park in Marikina City.

Head coach Marlon Maro, a member of the RP squad that finished 4th in the SEA Games in 1991, will guide a women's squad loaded with experience and full of youthful potential.

The RP lady booters are expected to go all-out against Thailand, knowing that the men's team lost, 1-0, to the Thais in Bacolod City.

Maro said he believes his solid defense with Merle Acibar and Letecia Bautista will hold and allow his attackers the space to find the back of the Thailand net.

Thailand and Myanmar currently lead the women's division with 3 points apiece in the table after their first day victories against Indonesia and

Vietnam. A Thailand win tonight will get them nearer to a bronze medal.

Philippine Football Federation president Johnny Romualdez and Marikina Mayor Marides Fernando yesterday called on football aficionados to support the team.

Filipino fans in Marikina are expected to wear red jerseys or shirts today as a sign of support since the RP lady booters will be using their red and white uniforms.

Letecia Bautista, Merle Acibar, Andrea Yang, Marielle Benitez, Clarisse Lazaro and GoalKeeper Levis Camarillo are among those expected to hold the squad together tonight with Fil-ams Miko Alley and the two Impelido sisters, Angeline and Patrice expected to spearhead the offense.*
