Security guard shoots self
for loss of brod's cellphone

Reportedly distraught over the loss of a cellphone he borrowed from his brother, a security guard killed himself Monday afternoon in his rented room at the Garcia Apartments at Dr. Meciano Road, Brgy. Taclobo, Dumaguete City.

Police identified the victim as Jonathan Catubig, 21, single of Sta. Cruz Nuevo, Tanjay City, a security guard of DACAY Security Agency, and member of the Armed Forces of the Philippine Enlisted Personnel Reservist, Bravo Company, Negros Oriental-Tanjay City Chapter.

Catubig's companion, Ardiano Carpe, 24, single, of Sta Cruz Nuevo and also a security guard, said he and the victim went home early Monday morning after their duty, and fell asleep on the same bed at about 8 a.m. At about 3:30 p.m., he said, a gunshot woke him up and he saw Catubig bathed in blood and apparently dead.

Responding police investigators found the victim's .357 caliber pistol service firearm beside his body.

Carpe said that, before they went home, Catubig was bothered by the loss of his brother's cellphone that he had borrowed, and his brother had been demanding that he paid for it.

Investigators have made Carpe undergo a paraffin test, the result of which, are not yet out.*RG
