An eleven-year-old girl from Sibulan, Oriental Negros, succumbed
to multiple stab wounds after she was attacked and allegedly raped
by an ex-convict a few meters from her house, at about 9:30 p.m.
Saturday in Sitio Ata-ata in Barangay San Antonio.
The victim, Mary Jane Calintig, was found by her mother being
attacked by the suspect, but it was too late. She had sustained
22 stab wounds on her chest and died on the way to the hospital.
The girl's mother, Luzviminda Calintig Fulmaran, who works
for a burger stand at the Sibulan town proper, said her daughter
usually stayed up until she returns home from work at night.
On Saturday night, however, the mother said she noticed that
her daughter was missing from her house, prompting her to search
in the neighborhood, but her neighbors told her they did not see
the girl.
Luzviminda recounted that when she called out the girl's name,
she heard moaning from about 30 meters away from their house, and
as she ran toward where the sound came from, she saw her daughter
bloodied, with the suspect still on top of her.
The mother said she immediately jumped on the suspect, who
managed to flee, but was arrested the following day by the Sibulan
police after she positively identified him.
Ehorpe is said to be an evacuee from Guihulngan town in the
province and lives in the same neighborhood where the victim and
her family reside.
The victim's younger brother said he recalled hearing somebody
calling out at their gate, and noticed a man come in.
The girl got up and went to the door to check on the visitor,
the boy said.
On Monday, the police filed charges of rape with homicide under
Republic Act 7610 or the Anti-Child Abuse Law, against Ehorpe, reportedly
an ex-convict who had been released from the National Bilibid Prisons
in Muntinlupa in June 2004, after having served a prison term for
murder.*JG
