A two-day Ecological Solid Waste Management training-seminar
for barangay officials was held at the Kabankalan City Hall, Kabankalan
City, Negros Occidental.
The project was in coordination with the Institute
of Environmental Governance of the University of St. La Salle in
Bacolod City and the Tanggol Kalikasan, with support from the Ford
Foundation, a press release from the Kabankalan City government
said.
Mayor Pedro Zayco, Jr., gave the welcome remarks.
He said the city is enjoining all barangays to strictly implement
the Republic Act 9003 or the Solid Waste Management Program. Speakers
were engineers Felix Querubin and Ann Pandan, Dr. Maridel Isulat,
lawyers Rey Depasucat and Alett Nuņez, SPO3 Walter Nepomuceno, Sr.,
Teresita Barcoma, Dr. Nemesio Caņete and Engr. Abet Pandan, the

Teachers,
administrators
join marine, wildlife camp
The Philippine Reef and Rainforest Conservation Foundation,
Inc. hosted the Marine and Wildlife Camp for high school teachers
and school administrators recently at the Danjugan Island, Brgy.
Bulata, Cauayan, Negros Occidental.
The activity was attended by 30 teachers from
St. Joseph High School, La Salle Integrated School, St. Benilde
and La Consolacion College from Bacolod City, and faculty and school
administrators of La Salle Lipa and La Salle Greenhills, a press
release from the Philippine Reef and Rainforest Conservation Foundation,
Inc. said yesterday.
The camp was part of the exposure to conservation
work in Negros Occidental and was aimed at aiding the school faculty
to incorporate conservation education in their science curriculum,
it said.
The Resource speakers were Pol Cariņo of the
Center for Tropical Studies for Bats and Forest Ecology; Renee Lorica
of Fauna and Flora International for Wildlife Biology; Myrtle Arias
of Reef Check International; Stefan Groenewold, Marine Fisheries
specialist of the German Development Service; and Terence Paul Dacles,
Sagay Marine Reserve Marine Biologist as the camp director.
Activities included bird and bat watching, trekking,
sky diving and a series of lectures on conservation. The PRRCFI
has been hosting marine and wildlife camps since 1992, the press
release added.
Danjugan Island has pristine forest and wildlife
and surrounding reefs; it has been awarded as the "Best Managed
Reef " in the country in 2002, the press release said.*
