Farmers deplore
military 'hit list'

Farmers in three remote barangays of Guihulngan town, Oriental Negros, deplored an alleged military list containing the names of about 23 members of Bayan Muna, Kaugmaon, and Karapatan supposed to be targets for liquidation.

Representatives of the organizations disclosed the existence of the hit list at a press conference called by the Promotion of Church People's Rights in Barangay Piapi, Dumaguete City Thursday.

The list allegedly included Fr. Wendy Sediego, district chairman of Karapatan; Emilia Quirante, chairperson of Hugpong Kaugmaon in Hilaitan, Guihulngan; Zacarias Tapales also of Kaugmaon and his wife, Amy Tapales,

coordinator of the Franciscan-supported Kalabaklabakan Mt. Clinic in Trinidad, Guihulngan; Oswaldo Saguran of Bayan Muna in Calamba, Guihulngan; Rene, Anthony, Renante, Nanding, and Eboy all surnamed Quirante, who are Hilaitan farmers; Hilarion Macalua III, Nick Reconalia, Jordan Albino, Victor Gadiano, Lita Estrada, Oscar Ventura, Beboy Guarin, Supring Mihay, Pascual Pasinabo, and Dannu Pasinabo, all farmers of Barrio Site detachment.

Emilia Quirante said a member of the paramilitary group closely working with the government forces operating in the three barangays disclosed the list to them.

Amy Tapales said about 42 soldiers swooped on Kalabaklabakan on Oct. 5 and occupied the compound of the Franciscan clinic.

Quirante claimed the soldiers hogtied a farmer and wrapped his head with plastic in August. She also claimed the soldiers conducted armed maneuvers outside an elementary school while classes were going on.

Tapales claimed the soldiers were looking for members of the Anak Pawis and Bayan Muna, and a wounded man.

Oswaldo Saguran of Bayan Muna said he could have been the person the soldiers were looking for, because two unidentified men attacked and shot him several times earlier. But, except for a thigh wound, Saguran said he survived because he crawled to a safe place.*RG
