'Money still key to RP
athletes' sustained success'

An adequate budget for next year is needed in order for the Philippine sports to continue its success, Rep. Monico Puentevella said.

"No sports plan in the world can ever succeed without the proper logistics. Without the proper budget, the most beautiful plan in the world will still fail," Puentevella said.

Philip Ella Juico, former Philippine Sports Commissioner chairman, said in a national daily that the lack of a master plan will create debates among the 40 national sports associations on which events will be included in the "Chosen 10". The "Chosen 10" is a formula that will be used in picking the 10 disciplines, that will be lavishly funded for training and extensive exposure to international competitions, for the Philippine goal to bring home its first- ever Olympic gold medal.

int'l tilts in January

Negrense boxers, who showcased strong performances during the 23rd Southeast Asian Games in Bacolod City, are expected to join other Filipino pugs in competing in 15 international tournaments next year.

SEA Games gold medalists Joan Tipon of Talisay City and Bagoeño Juanito Magliquian will most likely be parts of the boxing squads that will see action internationally in preparation for the Asian Games and the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Silver medalists Mark Jason Melliguen of Bacolod City and Bagoeños Reynaldo Galido and Joegen Ladon are also expected to earn slots in the international stints together with Cadiz City's Warlito Parreñas, who snared a bronze medal during the biennial meet.

Referees'
congress scheduled

About 80 volleyball referees from Region VI are expected to attend the Visayas Referees' Congress from Jan. 20 to 22 at the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City next year.

The participants will be designated as national referees level one, two three, four and five, and may be qualified to take international volleyball officiating courses, Roger Banzuela, president of the Philippine Volleyball Federation, said.

The congress, which is organized by the PVF, is held every two years as a requirement of the international volleyball federation, he added.
