Kabankalan event
features 15 bouts

Fifteen bouts will be showcased as the Negros Occidental Provincial Sports and Development Office launches its boxing program in Kabankalan City today.

Manuel De Oro, officer-in-charge of the PSDO, said that the boxing hostilities in Kabankalan will be the last program that will be started for this year after Ilog and Talisay City launched its boxing and swimming activities, respectively, yesterday.

The boxing tournament is part of the PSDO's provincial mass-based sports program that includes athletics.

De Oro said only minimal prizes will be given to the winners of each bout since the main purpose of the boxing program is to be a venue for both the in and out of school youth to take part in sporting activities.

About P60,000 has been allocated by the Provincial Government, headed by Gov. Joseph Maraņon, for 2005 to fund the grassroots project that serves as a venue for aspiring athletes to maximize their potentials in boxing, swimming and athletics.

Only boxing, swimming and athletics were included in the provincial mass-based sports program because these are the three disciplines where Negrenses perform really well, De Oro said.

Another budget will be proposed to Maraņon next year, he said, adding that he hopes for the Provincial Government to continue its support for the grassroots projects. The boxing tournament will kick off in the afternoon, following a boxing seminar that will be conducted in the morning, De Oro said.*CIT
