IN BEST-OF-THE-BEST
SWAT eyed as BCPO
hopes to win nat'l title

Bacolod City police director Senior Supt. Pedro Merced yesterday said he hopes to re-organize the Bacolod Special Weapons and Tactics team next year as an additional police force of the Bacolod police office in order to reduce crimes and maintain peace and order in the city.

He said he noted the absence of Bacolod SWAT team during the performance evaluation of the search for the "best of the best city police office" at the BCPO compound conducted by the Evaluation Team from Camp Crame led by General Antonio Billones yesterday morning.

The Bacolod City police office has been nominated as one of the finalists in the search for best of the best city police, along with Baguio and Davao cities.

Merced said the SWAT team will be composed of properly trained personnel who will be provided with complete facilities and vehicles to address the needs of Bacolod residents effectively.

He said the former Bacolod SWAT team had been disorganized and its members were re-assigned to different police stations, but he emphasized he will task new police personnel in the SWAT team in Bacolod City.

During the evaluation, the Bacolod police personnel were tasked to execute proper police intervention techniques in high-risk top scenarios and how to handcuff an arrested criminal.

Meanwhile, Billones, chief of the PNP Directorate Operation, yesterday said the BCPO preparation was good, but he did not reveal the chances of the Bacolod police to win the title since they are yet evaluating the two other contenders -- Baguio and Davao cities.

Billones said policemen should know police operational procedures because it will serve as their guide in performing their duties in the field.

Merced said the result will be released on the first week of January and he hopes that the Bacolod police could win the title in the city police office category.*DMG

Woman knifed by
daughter's live-in partner

A 45-year-old woman was wounded when her daughter's live-in partner allegedly stabbed her twice after an altercation at Purok Tahong, Brgy. 2, Bacolod City, at about 1:35 a.m. yesterday.

Rushed to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital was Susan Arlante Diaz of Purok Sigay in the same barangay, with stab wounds in her left breast and in her face, allegedly inflicted by Segundo Pijo Sarno, 24, with a kitchen knife, police reports said. Diaz's daughter, Irene, 24, and the live-in partner of Sarno, also complained to Police Precinct 2 that he hit her in the head with the handle of a kitchen knife, police reports said.

In an interview, Diaz said her relatives informed her that Sarno had been manhandling her daughter, prompting her to go to their residence.

She said she was shocked to see Sarno with a knife and about to stab her. She ran outside but he chased and stabbed her, she said. Meanwhile, Sarno said he did not intend to kill Diaz, but was only annoyed when she fetched Irene from their house during the wee hours to stroll around the city, leaving their children, 4 and 1 year old, unattended.

Sarno said he was under the influence of intoxicating liquor at the time and failed to control his temper.

Diaz, who is still in the CLMMRH, said she will file charges against Sarno who is detained at the lock-up cell of Police Precinct 2 for frustrated homicide.

Meanwhile, Rey Palma, of Cana-an Street, Eroreco Subdivision, Brgy. Mandalagan was rushed to the CLMMRH with a stab wound in his chest allegedly inflicted by an unidentified person while he was walking at Nueva-Smith streets in Bacolod City at about 1:42 a.m. yesterday, hospital reports said.

A 17-year-old boy from La Castellana town was also brought to the CLMMRH with a stab wound in his chest where he was reportedly hit by a still unidentified person near the Cokin Grocery at Libertad Market at about 2:45 a.m. yesterday.

At about 3 a.m. of the same day, Bernie Regemio, 43, of Manville Subdivision, Brgy. Pahanocoy was rushed to the Lady of Mercy Specialty Hospital with stab wounds allegedly inflicted by a certain Hernane Vargas at Daisan Refreshment at Lopez Jaena Street in the city.

The motives of the stabbing incidents are still being investigated by the Bacolod police.*DMG
