Guba claims fourth
international crown
LA CARLOTA'S PRIDE
TRIES TO GET BACK AT CEBUANA

Negrense Martina Guba snared her fourth international title yesterday, powering her partnership with Cebuana Sally Mae Siso to win the girls' 12-Under doubles crown of the Perlis International Age-Group Tennis Tournament in Malaysia.

Guba, who hails from La Carlota City, and Siso came-from-behind to down the Vietnamese tandem of Nguyen Nhoc Minh and Hyunh Phuong Dai Trang, 6-3, 6-4, to rule their division.

But the two netters from the Philippines will part ways today when they clash for the singles title.

Siso, who also has four titles, had gotten the better of Guba in their previous showdown in Penang, Malaysia, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5 and the La Carlota City netter, who breezed past Trang, 6-4, 6-1 in the semis, is expected to gain a measure of revenge in today's matchup.

It was only the first victory for Siso against Guba in their nine head-to-head encounters.

Guba, the country's best bet in the girls' 14-Under category, also took the singles' championship in the Selangor event at the expense of Siso.

The Guba-Siso pair fought back from a 1-4 deficit in the second set and win the next five games against the Vietnamese pair.

The 12-year-old Guba and Siso, who is from Cebu City, registered a resounding 6-2, 6-1 victory over the duo of Ji Ha Young and Nur Eliza Khairul to barge into the finals of the international event.

Siso, the Philippines' top ranked netter in the girls' 12-Under division, booked a seat in the finals by posting a 6-3, 6-3 triumph against Choo Lyn Yee.

The Perlis event is the third leg of the Malaysia-based stints that Guba is competing in. The fourth and final leg is the Langkawi International Age-Group Tennis Tournament.

The La Carlota City netter and Siso, who banner the Philippine Milo team, won the doubles' championships in the Selangor and Penang International Age-Group Tennis Tournaments.

Guba earned a slot to see action in the international tournaments after grabbing the girls' 12-Under title in the 2005 Milo Junior Tennis Cup national finals at the Philam home courts in Manila early last month. *CIT s
