Five colleges and a university in Negros Island are among the
78 schools named by Commission on Higher Education chairman Carlito
Puno as offering some courses with zero passing rates in licensure
examinations and with academic programs ordered phased out.
They are the Carlos Hilado Memorial State College in Bacolod
City, La Carlota Community College in La Carlota City, La Consolacion
College - Bacolod City and La Consolacion College - La Carlota City
all in Negros Occidental, and Foundation University and the Negros
Maritime College Foundation Inc. in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental.
The list was submitted by Puno to Senate President Franklin
Drilon during the Senate hearing on the proposed CHED budget for
2006.
Drilon told the DAILY STAR yesterday the list meant that some
of the courses offered by the schools mentioned had zero passing
rates and that necessary corrective measures such as phasing them
out were needed to protect students against substandard course offerings.
Drilon said he wants the CHED to phase out academic programs
that repeatedly fail to produce professionals.
As of press time, the Senate president did not have the list of
degrees with zero passing rates in licensure examinations among
the six schools in Negros available.*CPG
