Guba wins in opening round

La Carlota City netter Yannick Guba breezed to an impressive 6-1, 6-3 victory against Tonito Payumo Saturday to advance into the second round of the 2005 PCA Open in Paco, Manila.

Guba, seeded tenth, will start his second round campaign today in the weeklong tournament presented by Basilan Gov. Muslim "Wahab" Akbar.

Guba and partner Nico Riego De Dios also won against Lawrence Magaway and Michael Basco yesterday at the start of the doubles' division play. Guba and De Dios are seeded eighth.

Other seeded players barging into the second round of the event were fourth-seeded and 23rd Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Johnny Arcilla, fifth-seeded Rolando Ruel Jr. and eight-seeded Alexander Lazaro.

Arcilla made quick work of Raymond Diaz, 6-1, 6-1; Ruel outclassed Federico Balorio, 6-1,6-1, while Lazaro posted a convincing 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Virgilio Sison.

Also registering first round victories were wild card Mike Misa after she emerged victorious over qualifier Juv Alban, 6-1, 6-1, while Basco outlasted Juvan Divinagracia, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

Antonio Sagaysay III blanked Alfred Casareo, 6-0,6-0, to move on to the second phase as Luisito Clores rallied past Korean You Sung Hyun, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-2. Korean Hoon Sueng Oh demolished Marvin Serito, 6-0, 6-0, to book a seat in the next round.

Meanwhile, Guba's younger sister, Martina, will begin her singles and doubles' campaign in the Penang International Age-Group Tennis Tournaments in Malaysia today. *CIT
