Our
Lady of Guadalupe
feast today
The signing of the sistership of Our Lady of Manauag,
Philippines, and Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mexico, recently took place
at the chambers of Msgr. Diego Moroy, Archbishop of Mexico City
and administrator of the Basilica of our Lady of Guadalupe, and
Ambassador Justo Orros Jr.
Among those present during the signing and sealing
were Negrenses Sonny and Imee Luzuriaga who were then on tour in
Mexico City.
The basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico
is considered the greatest Marian shrine in the whole world. Some
20,000,000 pilgrims reportedly visit it annually to see the cloak,
or tilma, of the humble Mexican peasant Juan Diego, on which a glowing
image of the Blessed Virgin was miraculously imprinted 474 years
ago, on December 12, 1531.
The spring of Guadalupe, which suddenly gushed
forth from the ground when Juan Diego and Bishop Zumarraga were
looking for the exact location of the fourth apparition, is said
to be miraculous and has cured thousands of the sick.
Among the places the Luzuriagas visited were
Tepeyac Hill, which currently has six huge churches, with the topmost
church bring the site where the Blessed Virgin appeared to Juan
Diego.
Many small miracles took place during their visit.
First, they never expected to be witness to the symbolic signing
of the twinning. It was couples' fervent desired to see the tilma
and they were brought by the Archbishop himself to the nearest any
person could get beyond the secured cordoned area. Another little
miracle is that they were given by the Ambassador the book on Our
Lady of Guadalupe they had been looking for which was very rare.
The Wonder of our Lady of Guadalupe continues to
inspire Catholics. Her words as she appeared to Juan Diego on December
9 and 12, 1531 at Guadalupe, Mexico were "Know for certain that
I am the perfect and perpetual Virgin Mary, Mother of the true God…
here I will show and offer all my love, my compassion, my help and
my protection to the people. I am your merciful mother, the Mother
of all who love me, of those who have confidence in me. Here I will
hear their weeping and sorrows… their necessities and misfortunes…
Listen and let it penetrate your heart. Do not be
troubled or weighed down with grief. Do not fear any illnesses or
vexation, anxiety or pain. Am I not here who am your Mother? Are
you not under my shadow and protection? Am I not your fountain of
life? Are you not in the folds of my Mantle? In the crossing of
my arms? Is there anything else you need?"*
