P3.5M Balbina Cup opens today

Top-notch cockfighting action unfolds today at the Gallera de Pontevedra in Pontevedra, Negros Occidental, as the 10th edition of Balbina Cup begins.

The country's top cock breeders and cockfighting aficionados are in town for the 7-stag, P3.5 million derby. Action is expected to start after lunch.

Entries are still being accepted today for matches tomorrow. Championship is set Oct. 26, said GdP manager Efren Apurado.

The annual derby is also expected to bring to the province breeders and cockfighting enthusiasts from abroad, Apurado added.

The Balbina Cup is one of the major cockfighting events in the country today that showcases the best-bred fighting cocks, Apurado said, adding that the venue is reputed as the one of the cleanest and biggest cockpits in the world.

Aside from the cash prize, the winner goes home with a gold-plated cup that has become a coveted trophy in the industry, he added.

Entry fee is P22,000. Minimum bet is P11,000. A multi-purpose vehicle and gift packs will be given away in a raffle draw among the entries. This year's Balbina Cup is supported by San Miguel B-Meg Feeds, San Miguel Corp. and La Tondeņa.*
